The Magick of Children*

As I watch my children grow and mature I marvel at their unique power. They do not question that the world is full of mystery and magick. I grew up Catholic and somewhere along the road everything had to have a very appropriate answer. Yet still, I tell my children "Nothing is impossible only improbable" my favorite phrase from Sherlock Holmes ^_^ So my children are growing up believing in fairies, dragons, and other mystical beings. They talk to the earth and question the animals directly for why they act the way they do, and they have no qualms about singing to the flowers. My daughters try to bring down the rain and my son uses a pendulum. None of my kids are afraid of monsters because they know they have the power to shoo them away.
My children are also taught tolerance and the value of hard work and to stand up for what is right, but at the same time I wonder if my husband and I should shelter them more. So many people question raising children in the Pagan religion or with any religion for that matter. I fear that they will have to suffer hate and cruelty for living this life. As a mom I want nothing more than their happiness, but I can't shield them forever. Lucky for me, my kids show no fear and believe they can LOVE the world and the world and the people on it will LOVE them right back. Who knows...their probably right. The magick of children, their sweetness and light, their uncontrollable fascination with everything....if we all viewed the world with such abandon, I do not doubt the world would be an even more wonderful, sweeter place to be.

  1. I've struggled with the same questions. Should I shelter them more or should I teach them that it is their responsibility to try and change the bad things of life? I often feel that parenthood is one big discourse analysis test that somebody sprung on me.

  2. I've been thinking about this lately. I feel that when I raise ours Pagan, they'll be a bit more mature than most children because they'll have better understanding of their world and of themselves. I don't want to shelter ours--I've been there--a victim of hate crimes based on my beliefs--and it's made me stronger and smarter. I don't want them to ever be a victim, which is why we're going to educate them on the world, other religions, and enrolling them in martial art classes won't hurt either. Good post! Blessings. ~)O(~
